Frequently Asked Questions

What is installation art?

Installations are artwork that are site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. All of the works at the Mattress Factory are conceived in the space you view them in.

Is there more than one building?

Yes! The Mattress Factory is comprised of three bulidings throughout the Mexican War streets of Pittsburgh's North Side. Please visit the main building at 500 Sampsonia Way (set your GPS to 505 Jacksonia way, our parking lot address) to visit the Admissions Desk before you begin.

How long will it take to view all of the works?

Though it varies from visitor to visitor, we find that most people can move through our galleries in between 2-3 hours.

Is the museum accessible?

The Mattress Factory is committed to enabling inclusive and interactive experiences for all visitors! We are continually working to improve our space for all visitors. Please visit our Accessibility page for more details.

Do you have a cafe or shop?

We have both! The MF Café offers delicious fare from Coca Cafe in Lawrenceville. The MF Shop is open during normal museum hours. Museum admission is not required to shop or dine!

Can I take photos in the museum?

Personal photos are encouraged! No flash or tripods are allowed, and photography is permitted in any gallery unless otherwise noted. Please use #MattressFactory when sharing images on social media.

Any commercial or professional photography must have prior approval from the museum before filming. Visit the MF Press Room for more information.

Are food + drink allowed?
Food and drink are not permitted in the museum galleries. Food and drinks are available for purchase in the MF Café, but may not be carried into the museum galleries.

What about smoking?

Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the Mattress Factory, or on museum property. Electronic cigarettes are not allowed in the galleries.
